Rune Bets on Hillerød for His Achilles Comeback
Holger Rune wants his first match 11 months after an Achilles rupture to be a home Davis Cup tie in Hillerød, then Tokyo.
Holger Rune wants his first match back from an Achilles rupture to be Denmark’s home Davis Cup tie in Hillerød on 18 and 19 September. The former world No. 4 has been out 319 days since he retired in the Stockholm semifinal last October, and he has already pulled out of this fortnight’s US Open.
He is stacking a new Wilson frame and hit sessions with Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz onto a best of three rubber in front of Danish fans, then pointing the same buildup at Tokyo and Shanghai.
Hillerød Is the Comeback He Wants First
The Danish Tennis Federation has Denmark meets Bulgaria in Hillerød at Royal Stage on 18 and 19 September in World Group I. Friday’s session from 16:00 holds two singles. Saturday from 12:00 holds the doubles and two reverse singles. Every rubber is best of three, and the first nation to three wins takes the tie.
Rune said he would love to make his comeback in front of all his Danish fans. That line is the wager in plain speech: the first night back is a packed home hall, not a quiet tour event with a small crowd and a low draw.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The injury: He ruptured his left Achilles on 18 October 2025 in the Stockholm semifinal against Ugo Humbert, then ranked No. 30, and had the tendon repaired.
- The ranking: Davis Cup lists him at No. 133, a long way from his career high of No. 4 on 21 August 2023.
- The path he named: Davis Cup at home, then the Japan Open and the Shanghai Masters, then the indoor swing.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- The team sheet: Denmark has not named its Hillerød squad, so his first rubber is still a hope with a date.
- Tokyo entry: The Japan Open is the first ATP stop on the plan his camp described, and it is not the same thing as a locked main-draw berth.
- Match fitness: He is aiming at three-set practice sessions; he has not yet played a recorded official match in 2026.
Entry-list watchers have already written Tokyo in as the first tour stop. The Davis Cup nomination is still blank, which means Hillerød can slip even if the calendar square stays red and white.
Why a Five-Set Slam Was Ruled Out
Rune’s mother and manager, Aneke Rune, put the slam decision in writing in late August. Holger had just trained three-hour sessions with Carlos Alcaraz and was hitting at a high level, she said, and the only live question was whether a best-of-five Grand Slam was the right first event after a layoff that started in October 2025.
Holger has played tennis at a very high level this week, it has been a pleasure to watch, and trained three-hour sessions with Carlos. So the weighing up has only been whether it was right to make his comeback in a best-of-5-sets tournament, and Holger and the team have judged to wait and start at Davis Cup and from there Tokyo, Shanghai and then the indoor season.
Aneke Rune, mother and manager, written statement
That call closed a year of moved targets. He stayed out of Roland Garros, Wimbledon and Cincinnati, and he then passed on the US Open, which runs 31 August to 13 September. A five-set first night would have asked the repaired tendon for four hours of stop-start push-off before he had played a single recorded set in 2026. Hillerød asks for two or three sets, then a night of sleep, then another day in the same hall.
Month 11 Arrives on the Davis Cup Weekend
Eighteen October 2025 to 18 September 2026 is 11 months on the nose. That is the window most surgical guides give for a return to cutting and jumping sport, and it is also the window in which the tendon often feels ready while the calf is still catching up.
THE ACHILLES CLOCK AGAINST HIS CALENDAR
| Mark | Typical window | Rune’s date |
|---|---|---|
| Injury and repair | Week 0 | 18 October 2025, Stockholm |
| Jogging | Months 5 to 6 | Spring 2026 rehab |
| Cutting and jumping sport | Months 9 to 12 | Hillerød at 11 months |
| First ATP week on the plan | Same 9 to 12 month band | Tokyo, 12 days after the Friday singles |
Clinic guides put walking at 8 to 12 weeks, jogging at 5 to 6 months, and court sport at 9 to 12 months, with calf strength still climbing into the second year. One common finding is a 10 to 20 percent strength gap versus the other leg even at two years. Re-rupture risk is quoted between 1.6 percent and 15 percent, with most of those failures in months 3 to 6, which he has already cleared.
A small tennis-specific series on tennis return rates after Achilles rupture found only two of seven patients got back on court, at 5 and 36 months, in a group far older than a 23-year-old tour player. The useful number from the wider literature is the spread, a mean return between 5.6 and 12.3 months, and the warning not to chase match play before six months. He is past that floor. He is not past the long tail.
It’s not so much rehab anymore, it’s preparing to perform again.
Holger Rune
That is the sentence athletes say when the boot is gone and the tendon no longer dominates every step. The remaining work, he said, is explosiveness and footwork, rebuilt as a daily job on and off the court.
Spin and Head Speed From a New Frame
Rune has left Babolat for Wilson. He called the new stick very stable, with incredible racquet head speed and a lot of spin and power, and said the change has given him more confidence on the shots that close a point. Wilson’s own launch note for the Defyer lists him among more than 30 tour players on Defyer, a franchise the company put on sale from 9 July after Karen Khachanov took an early prototype into events.
The switch did not start in a hospital gym. In September 2025, weeks before Stockholm, he was already hitting a painted-out frame at Davis Cup and saying he had trained with it since right after that year’s US Open. The injury then froze the experiment for 11 months. He will now play his first official points with a frame he last tested in matches before the tendon went.
A racquet change on a healthy player is a feel problem. A racquet change on a player relearning first-step timing is a second variable on the same ankle.
Three Hours With Alcaraz Is Still Practice
During the layoff he has hit with Lorenzo Musetti, Alexander Müller and Jannik Sinner, then with Alcaraz in the week he pulled out of New York. The top names, he said, take the ball earlier, hit deeper and with more precision, and keep him under constant pressure. That is useful stress. It is still a session he can stop.
A DAY IN THE PERFORMANCE PHASE
- Morning block: More than an hour of mobility and strength work, then about two hours of tennis.
- Afternoon block: More rehab or cardio, which he called a constant job every day on and off the court.
- Match shape: He has moved from one-set practice matches toward full three-set sessions, the length of a Hillerød rubber.
- The gap he named: Explosiveness and footwork, the two things an Achilles repair steals and a Davis Cup return demands first.
A three-hour hit with Alcaraz can copy the ball speed of a tour night. It cannot copy a second match on Saturday, a doubles nomination, or the jump-cut of a return game when the hall is loud and the rubber still matters. That is the piece only Hillerød can sell him, which is why the team is using the tie as a bridge rather than as a ceremony.
Denmark Hosts Bulgaria at Royal Stage
Denmark needed this weekend because the year already got away from it. Without Rune, the side lost 3-1 to Croatia in February and dropped into World Group I. With him last season it had flipped a 0-2 hole against Serbia in front of 10,000 at Royal Arena, a comeback he helped finish in singles and doubles.
Davis Cup records give him eight singles wins in Davis Cup against four losses, plus a 2-0 doubles mark across seven ties since his 2018 debut. He is 23, born 29 April 2003 in Gentofte, and he still owns a 175-107 tour record and five titles even after a blank 2026. The ranking is the scar. The home hall is the bet that the scar does not dictate the first night.
FROM STOCKHOLM TO THE HOME TIE
- October 18, 2025: Retires in the Stockholm semifinal with a left Achilles rupture.
- February 6-7, 2026: Denmark loses 3-1 to Croatia in the qualifiers without him.
- May to July 2026: Stays out of Roland Garros and Wimbledon as the tendon rehab continues.
- August 2026: Withdraws from Cincinnati, trains with Alcaraz, and rules out a five-set US Open return.
- September 18-19, 2026: Denmark hosts Bulgaria at Royal Stage, the first date on his own comeback map.
Captain Frederik Løchte Nielsen can still leave him off the sheet. Bulgaria has not named its side either. The weekend only becomes a comeback when his name is in the singles draw on Friday afternoon.
Tokyo and Shanghai Follow in Two Weeks
If he gets through Hillerød, the next square on the ATP sheet is tight. The Kinoshita Group Japan Open in Tokyo, an ATP 500, runs 30 September to 6 October, which is 12 days after the Friday singles. The Rolex Shanghai Masters then runs 7 to 18 October. Those two weeks are the Tokyo week on the 2026 calendar his camp has been training toward, with the indoor season after that.
The ranking will not wait for the tendon. His 2025 Tokyo points come off on 28 September, Shanghai’s on 12 October, and Stockholm’s on 19 October, which is how a year away turns into the shorter ranking clock after the layoff. Playing the Asia swing is how he replaces those points. Sitting them out is how No. 133 becomes a number that no longer gets him into the events that would fix it.
RUNE AT THE COMEBACK LINE
- Time out: 319 days through 2 September, 11 months on the Hillerød weekend.
- Ranking: No. 133, career high No. 4, five titles, 175-107 on the tour.
- Davis Cup: 8-4 in singles, 2-0 in doubles, seven ties since 2018.
- Next dates: 18-19 September in Hillerød, 30 September to 6 October in Tokyo, 7-18 October in Shanghai.
Sixteen days remain before the Friday singles in Hillerød, and the squad list is still unwritten. The tendon has had its 11 months. The first rubber has not.
