Ty Dieffenbach Inherits UCLA After Iamaleava’s Torn ACL
Nico Iamaleava is expected to miss UCLA’s season with a torn ACL, so the 5-0 Bruins now turn to Cal Poly transfer Ty Dieffenbach.
Nico Iamaleava is expected to miss the rest of UCLA’s season with a torn ACL, and the Bruins’ 5-0 start now runs through backup Ty Dieffenbach. Dieffenbach already threw the touchdown in a 17-15 win at then-No. 13 Oregon on October 10.
UCLA sits at No. 12 in the AP Poll, its highest ranking since November 2022, with a 3-0 Big Ten mark under first-year coach Bob Chesney. The next snap belongs to a Calabasas product who spent last fall at Cal Poly.
The Tackle That Took Iamaleava Out of the Oregon Game
Iamaleava was running late in the second quarter at Autzen Stadium when Oregon defensive lineman Bear Alexander and linebacker Jerry Mixon closed on him. His knee gave as he went down. Trainers looked at him, he jogged off, and he missed one play before coming back.
The next throw was intercepted in the end zone. Chesney told a halftime TV crew the hit had been to the thigh and that his quarterback was fine. Iamaleava did not start the second half. He later appeared in street clothes.
The same tackle produced a separate fight on the broadcast. Replay showed Alexander twisting Iamaleava’s helmet and punching toward the head, with no flag. Iamaleava had already told his coach, “They keep punching me in the face.” Chesney called the shot egregious on Monday, October 12, and said it was a shame officials missed it. The knee injury came from the pile, not from that punch.
Before he left, Iamaleava went 10 of 17 for 162 yards and those two interceptions. Through five games he had completed 72 of 116 passes (62.1%) for 982 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions, and he had run 42 times for 144 yards and another score.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The diagnosis: Pete Nakos said Iamaleava suffered a torn ACL at Oregon and that his season is over.
- The coach: Chesney said Monday there was “serious concern” and that he would wait on UCLA doctors, with a meeting still ahead that day.
- The return line: Asked if Iamaleava could play again this season, Chesney said, “There’s a chance, if we’re seeing things differently than where we’re at here.”
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Public medical detail: Chesney has not stood at a podium and confirmed a season-ending ACL tear.
- Other structures: Sports-medicine accounts reviewing the broadcast described a valgus snap that also raises questions about the MCL and meniscus, which UCLA has not addressed.
- A fifth college year: Iamaleava is a senior listed at 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds, and no school statement has set his 2027 plans.
Matt Zenitz, who first put the remainder-of-the-season timeline with Nakos, also said NFL front-office staffers had recently treated Iamaleava as an ascending top-three-round prospect. That clock is now on hold.
Dieffenbach Already Beat No. 13 Oregon
When it became clear at halftime that Iamaleava would not return, UCLA told Dieffenbach he would take the second half. Chesney’s scouting report on the moment was short. “Zero nerves,” the coach said. “He’s like, ‘Let’s go.’”
When someone goes down and someone has to step up, I say it every single time, you’re either exposed or you’re revealed. One of the two is going to happen when your number gets called. For Ty to step up in that moment when Nico couldn’t go, he put himself in a spot where he was revealed for knowing the run game and getting us into the touchdown pass.
Bob Chesney, UCLA head coach, postgame at Autzen Stadium
Dieffenbach finished 3 of 6 for 43 yards and the touchdown that stood up in a 17-15 game, UCLA’s first win over Oregon since 2017. He did not have to light up Autzen. He had to hand the ball off, throw when the look was clean, and avoid the mistake that would have undone a defensive night.
That is a thin sample, and it is also the only Power conference tape he has. Dieffenbach, a 6-foot-6, 227-pound senior from Calabasas, spent two seasons at Pitt without playing, then started at Cal Poly in 2025. In nine games he completed 92 of 162 passes (56.8%) for 1,305 yards, nine touchdowns and nine interceptions, and he ran 67 times for 321 yards and four scores.
The Cal Poly year was uneven. He started the first four games, sat with an injury, then threw four interceptions at Montana on 15-of-33 passing for 225 yards. He logged five attempts the next time out, came off the bench, and later ran for 142 yards and a score at Idaho State. Cal Poly finished 4-8. He entered the portal again and landed at UCLA as the No. 190 quarterback in On3’s 2026 portal rankings, the 22nd portal addition in that class.
The high school tape is why scouts once bothered. At Agoura he threw for 4,153 yards and 48 touchdowns over three seasons, including 2,669 yards and 34 scores as a junior, and ESPN ranked him No. 95 in California. He also pitched. After Oregon he sounded like someone who had been waiting on a messy opportunity, not a fairy tale. “I’ve just been waiting for this moment. I was ready,” he said. “At the end of the day, football’s football for me.”
Who Starts Against Wisconsin on Saturday?
Chesney went with Dieffenbach at Oregon because that week of practice had pointed to more quarterback runs, and he said Ty had the better week as a runner. He also left the other door open. Madden Iamaleava, Nico’s younger brother, “is going to be there the whole way through as well, competing and fighting for that position with or without Nico.”
Dieffenbach described the same fight from the inside. “Every week is a battle between me and Madden for the two spot,” he said after the Oregon game. “Both of us were executing in practice but today they felt to go with me.”
On Monday, Chesney indicated Dieffenbach would be the first quarterback against Wisconsin, still on a week-to-week footing. At James Madison he often split work among more than one quarterback, so a two-man package would not be new for him.
THE QUARTERBACKS BEHIND NICO
- Ty Dieffenbach: Senior transfer, 3 of 6 for 43 yards and a touchdown at Oregon, the only backup with a full college starting season on his résumé.
- Madden Iamaleava: Sophomore, 6-foot-2 and 197 pounds, a four-star recruit from Long Beach Polytechnic who spent spring 2025 at Arkansas, then followed his brother west.
- The unused names: Sophomore Colton Gumino and freshman DJ Bordeaux are listed and have not played in a college game.
Madden’s college file is almost empty. He appeared in the fourth quarter at Ohio State on November 15, 2025, and did not throw. This season he has spelled his brother against California and taken a handful of snaps against Purdue and Maryland. His career passing log is one incompletion. As a junior at Warren High he completed 196 of 311 passes (63.0%) for 3,626 yards, 43 touchdowns and four interceptions, which is why he was a four-star, No. 142 overall player on ESPN’s board.
He came to UCLA, he said on the school’s roster page, “to stay home closer to family and represent Cali.” If Dieffenbach stalls, the next man up is not a mystery visitor. He is the starter’s brother, with almost no live evidence at this level.
Iamaleava’s Path From Knoxville to No. 12
The reason this sting is so sharp is the two-year bet UCLA made on Iamaleava. He transferred from Tennessee before the 2025 season, stayed when Chesney arrived, and started every game after he got to Westwood. In 2024 at Tennessee he threw for 2,616 yards, 19 touchdowns and five interceptions, went 10-3, and took the Volunteers into the College Football Playoff, where Ohio State beat them 17-42.
The first UCLA year was harder. He passed for 1,928 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 11 games, ran for 505 yards and four scores, and the Bruins finished 3-9. This fall the supporting pieces finally fit. UCLA won its first five games of 2026 by beating California 45-24, San Diego State 28-10, Purdue 52-38, Maryland 54-3 and Oregon 17-15. The Big Ten preseason media poll had the Bruins 13th in the league. Five weeks later they are 3-0 in it.
IAMALEAVA’S COLLEGE PASSING LINE
| Season | Team | Comp-Att | Yards | TD | INT |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Tennessee | 28-45 | 314 | 2 | 0 |
| 2024 | Tennessee | 213-334 | 2,616 | 19 | 5 |
| 2025 | UCLA | 208-323 | 1,928 | 13 | 7 |
| 2026 | UCLA | 72-116 | 982 | 4 | 4 |
His career totals now sit at 521 of 818 (63.7%) for 5,840 yards, 38 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, plus 1,078 rushing yards and 11 rushing scores. In 16 games as a Bruin he has 2,910 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The 2026 efficiency bump (8.5 yards per attempt, a 138.1 rating) is what a 5-0 team was building on, even with a 4-to-4 touchdown-to-interception line that never looked pretty.
UCLA Forced Seven Turnovers Without Its Starter
Oregon was already a grind before the injury. After it, the Bruins won with the parts of the roster that do not need a 2,600-yard passer. The defense forced seven turnovers. Running back Wayne Knight ran for a touchdown and caught another, his 10th rushing score of the season. Oregon’s late two-point try failed. A 27-yard field-goal try by UCLA was blocked by Matayo Uiagalelei, so the margin never got comfortable.
That is the Chesney imprint more than the Iamaleava imprint. The first four wins were blowouts. The fifth was a 17-15 road game against a ranked team, finished by a backup who attempted six passes. If Dieffenbach’s Cal Poly interceptions show up on Saturdays, the Bruins still have a path that looks like Autzen: run Knight, play clean, and let the defense steal possessions.
The public argument after the game kept circling Alexander’s punch, because the clip is ugly and it went unflagged. The football problem is narrower. Dieffenbach and Madden Iamaleava have almost no shared Power conference starts between them. Six completions in a half at Oregon do not answer Michigan in Ann Arbor or USC in the Rose Bowl. They only prove the locker room did not freeze when the starter went down.
Seven Games Still Stand on UCLA’s Slate
UCLA is 2-0 at home and 3-0 on the road, with a five-game winning streak. Seven regular-season games remain in a 12-game season, and only one opponent is ranked right now. The Bruins host Wisconsin at the Rose Bowl on October 17 at 4:30 p.m. PDT, then stay home for Michigan State and Nevada before a November stretch that includes Minnesota on the road, Illinois at home, Michigan in Ann Arbor, and No. 19 USC (6-1) back in Pasadena.
THE GAMES DIEFFENBACH INHERITS
| Date | Opponent | Site | Record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct. 17 | Wisconsin | Rose Bowl | 4-1 |
| Oct. 24 | Michigan State | Rose Bowl | 2-4 |
| Oct. 31 | Nevada | Rose Bowl | 2-3 |
| Nov. 7 | Minnesota | Away | 4-2 |
| Nov. 13 | Illinois | Rose Bowl | 3-3 |
| Nov. 21 | Michigan | Away | 3-2 |
| Nov. 28 | USC | Rose Bowl | 6-1, No. 19 |
A College Football Playoff berth would be a first for the program, and that math still runs through an unbeaten record or something very close to it. Wisconsin is 4-1. Michigan and USC are the games that will tell poll voters whether Autzen was a one-night patch or a sustainable plan. Chesney’s 5-0 start bought him this problem. Dieffenbach now has to live in it, with Madden Iamaleava one series away if the Cal Poly tape, and not the Oregon half, is what shows up.
The Bruins take the field again on October 17 at the Rose Bowl, and the first snap is listed for Ty Dieffenbach.
