What this page covers
This policy explains what cookies and similar technologies are used on STUDIO ONE NETWORKS, who sets them, and how you can control them. It works alongside our Privacy Policy, which covers everything else we do with data. The honest summary: we set very little ourselves, and most cookies on this site come from the advertising and analytics services that keep an independent news site free to read.
What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store. On its own it does nothing; it is a label that lets a site or a service recognize the same browser on a later request. Related technologies such as local storage and pixels do similar jobs and are covered by this policy under the same word. Cookies set by the site you are visiting are called first-party cookies; cookies set by other services embedded in the page, such as ad networks, are third-party cookies.
Cookies we set ourselves
Our own cookies are few and functional. They may remember a preference such as a dismissed notice or a consent choice, and they may support basic site operation such as load balancing. None of our first-party cookies track you across other websites, and none of them are used to build a profile of you. If you clear them, the site continues to work; you may simply be asked for a preference again.
Third-party cookies
The third-party services on this site fall into a small number of categories:
- Advertising. Ad networks set cookies to serve ads, limit repetition, detect fraud and measure whether ads were seen. Where you have consented, or where local law permits, these cookies may also be used to personalize ads based on your interests across sites. These are the most significant cookies on the site in privacy terms.
- Analytics. Our analytics provider sets cookies to distinguish visits so that our traffic numbers mean something. We read this data in aggregate only, as described in the Privacy Policy.
- Embedded content. News stories sometimes embed material hosted elsewhere, such as videos or social media posts. The moment such an embed loads, its provider may set its own cookies under its own policy. Where practical we use privacy-enhanced embed modes that delay this until you interact with the content.
Each of these providers publishes its own cookie and privacy documentation, and their practices are governed by those documents, not by ours. What we control is which providers appear on our pages, and we keep that list as short as a functioning ad-funded site allows.
Consent
Visitors in regions whose laws require consent for non-essential cookies are shown a consent tool before such cookies are set. Your choices there are honored: declining personalization means advertising cookies operate in a restricted, non-personalized mode where the ad network supports one. You can revisit and change your consent choices at any time through the consent tool available on the site.
Controlling cookies yourself
Independently of any consent tool, your browser gives you direct control. Every major browser lets you view stored cookies, delete them, block third-party cookies entirely or block all cookies. Browser documentation explains the exact steps. Blocking all cookies may affect small conveniences, such as preferences not being remembered, but this site remains readable with cookies fully blocked; the news does not sit behind a cookie wall.
For advertising specifically, the major networks also offer their own opt-out mechanisms and industry opt-out pages that apply across many sites at once. Using them alongside browser controls gives the broadest effect.
How long cookies last
Cookies come in two lifespans. Session cookies exist only until you close your browser and are used for things that only matter during a visit. Persistent cookies carry an expiry date set by whoever created them, ranging from days to many months, and are what allow a consent choice to be remembered or an ad network to recognize a returning browser. Deleting cookies through your browser removes both kinds immediately, regardless of their stated expiry. We do not use any technique designed to resurrect cookies a user has deliberately deleted, and we would drop any partner found doing so on our pages.
