Delta Adds Venice and Athens Routes as Cities Tighten Access
Delta adds Boston-Venice and Detroit-Athens flights for 2027 and starts some Europe routes in March, as Venice weighs a higher day fee.
Delta Air Lines will fly Boston to Venice four times a week from May 7, 2027, and Detroit to Athens three times a week from June 8. Both cities already sit on Delta’s map from Atlanta and New York, so the add is extra U.S. gateways, timed with a longer Europe season that now starts in March.
The airline said so on September 25, 2026, wrapping the two flights around a Paris route from Austin that it had already set for March 27. Jeff Arinder, Delta’s vice president of international network planning, pitched choice on the clock, not new dots on the European map.
Customers continue to seek more flexibility, convenience and choice when traveling to Europe, whether they are planning a spring escape, a summer vacation or a fall getaway. By adding new European destinations from Detroit and Boston, establishing Austin as a new gateway to Europe and extending service on several popular routes, we’re giving customers more choice, greater flexibility and more opportunities to travel when and how they want.

Boston to Venice, Four Days a Week
Delta’s new service from Detroit and Boston puts Venice on a Logan departure board that already leans on widebody jets for every Atlantic hop. The Venice flight runs through October 29, 2027, on an Airbus A330-300 with Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort, and Delta Main.
Boston becomes Delta’s third U.S. gateway to Venice, after Atlanta and New York’s Kennedy. In peak summer it will be the airline’s 13th unique long-haul city from Logan and its 12th in continental Europe, with ties to nearly 20 U.S. cities over Boston.
Sharon Williams, Massport’s executive director of aviation, said Italy remains a draw for New England travelers and that the flight strengthens ties between the two regions. Delta also plans to raise Boston-Milan to daily in 2027, part of a U.S.-Italy schedule it puts at up to 17 peak-day departures and more than 30,000 nonstop seats to Italy each week.
Logan is Delta’s closest U.S. hub to Europe and, the airline says, Boston’s No. 1 carrier. A nonstop into Marco Polo skips the usual Rome or Milan landing and the train that follows, though a water taxi still sits between the airport and the historic islands.
Delta Pushes Summer Into March
The new flights are seasonal. The calendar around them is the larger change: several Europe routes that used to wake up in May will start in early spring, and a few will run deeper into fall and winter.
THE 2027 EUROPE CALENDAR
- January 2027: Cincinnati-Paris continues three times weekly through March.
- Early March 2027: Minneapolis-St. Paul and Detroit start seasonal Rome flights.
- March 27, 2027: Austin-Paris daily service begins on an Airbus A330-900neo.
- April 2027: Seattle-Rome returns.
- Earlier in the season: New York-Kennedy flights to Catania, Porto, Prague, and Copenhagen come back sooner, as do Boston and Seattle to Barcelona and Atlanta to Edinburgh.
- May 7, 2027: Boston-Venice begins, four times weekly through October 29.
- June 8, 2027: Detroit-Athens begins, three times weekly through October 28.
- When Rome and Copenhagen resume: Detroit-Rome and New York-Kennedy-Copenhagen operate daily.
Delta is answering a shift it has talked about for two summers: more people want Europe in spring and fall, when the heat is lower and the main squares are less packed. Early March Rome from Minneapolis and Detroit is the clearest tell. Venice and Athens, the two new names on the board, still open in May and June and close at the end of October.
Venice Wants a Steeper Day Ticket
Those Boston aircraft will park in a city that already bills day visitors and is talking about charging more in 2027. Hotel guests on an overnight ticket are not the target. The people Venice is trying to slow down are the ones who come for the afternoon and leave.
VENICE ACCESS FEE RULES
- Who pays: Day visitors older than 14 who enter the historic city, unless they fall under an exemption.
- Who skips it: Residents, workers, students, overnight guests, and several other listed groups do not pay.
- The 2026 price: 5 euros if paid by the fourth day before arrival, 10 euros if paid later.
- The 2026 window: The city’s Venice access contribution calendar ran 60 non-consecutive days from April 3 to July 26.
- The 2026 take: City figures put sales at nearly 680,000 tickets and more than 5.2 million euros.
Michele Zuin, Venice’s budget councillor, said after three trial years that the 5-euro and 10-euro charge is now “affordable for virtually everyone” and may no longer push people off the busiest days. He has talked of a 2027 rate around 30 euros, with 50 euros raised in the same conversation, and of stretching the calendar into March and September. That is not locked. It would need Rome’s sign-off.
A Delta passenger who sleeps in Venice does not buy that ticket. The collision is still on the calendar. Delta is selling March as a quieter way into Italy at the same moment Venice is asking whether March should join the paid days, and the new Boston flight still aims at one of the most watched historic centers in Europe.
Detroit Finally Gets a Nonstop to Athens
The Michigan side of the announcement is a first. Wayne County Airport Authority CEO Chad Newton said Southeast Michigan has not had a nonstop to Athens from Detroit Metro before.
For the first time at DTW, travelers in Southeast Michigan will have nonstop access to Athens, one of the world’s most iconic destinations. We appreciate Delta Air Lines’ continued investment in Detroit and are excited about the new opportunities this service will create for tourism, business and cultural connections.
Chad Newton, CEO, Wayne County Airport Authority
Athens becomes Delta’s 12th unique long-haul city from Detroit in peak summer and its seventh in continental Europe. Detroit becomes the airline’s fourth U.S. gateway to the Greek capital, after Atlanta, Boston, and Kennedy, with connections to more than 40 U.S. cities through the hub.
The flight uses an Airbus A330-200 through October 28, 2027. For some passengers Athens is the trip. For others it is the jump to the islands, which is why a Midwest nonstop has been an obvious gap even if the city itself is not new to Delta.
Route-watchers treated the whole 2027 package as a small add, and that read is fair on geography: Venice and Athens were already in the system. Detroit filling an Athens hole, and Boston adding a third Italy city beside Rome and Milan, is local convenience more than a new map of Europe. The metal matches that caution. These two routes use the older A330-200 and A330-300. Austin’s Paris launch gets the A330-900neo.
What 282 Seats a Flight Adds
Delta publishes a single layout for each type. The Boston jet is the larger of the two, which is why the cabin math matters more than the city names on the press release.
THE TWO NEW ATLANTIC ROUTES
| Route | Aircraft | Total seats | Delta One | Premium Select | Comfort | Main | Weekly flights | Season |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boston to Venice | Airbus A330-300 | 282 | 34 | 21 | 24 | 203 | 4 | May 7 to October 29, 2027 |
| Detroit to Athens | Airbus A330-200 | 223 | 34 | 21 | 24 | 144 | 3 | June 8 to October 28, 2027 |
The 282-seat Airbus A330-300 layout puts 34 lie-flat Delta One seats up front, then 21 Premium Select seats at 38 inches of pitch. Comfort takes 24 seats at 34 inches. Main holds 203. The A330-200 keeps the same premium counts and trims Main to 144, which is why Detroit’s airplane is the smaller ship on the thinner frequency.
That is not a flood into either city. It is one widebody a few days a week, pointed at places that already take millions of visitors and, in Venice’s case, already sell hundreds of thousands of day tickets in a single spring. The tell is the target, not the volume.
Paris From Austin, Daily From March
The two September flights join a Texas route Delta revealed in August. Daily summer-season service from Austin-Bergstrom to Paris Charles de Gaulle starts March 27, 2027, on an A330-900neo, the airline’s first transatlantic route from Austin and Austin’s first nonstop to Paris.
Eastbound, the plan is a 3:15 p.m. departure and an 8:15 a.m. arrival the next day. The return leaves Paris at 10:10 a.m. and reaches Austin at 2:20 p.m. the same day. Through Air France-KLM, Delta says Austin customers gain one-stop access to nearly 70 cities in Europe, India, and Africa. With KLM’s Amsterdam flight, the joint venture says it will offer up to 10 weekly nonstops between Austin and Europe in the summer peak.
Austin is the only 2027 add that opens a true new long-haul city pair for Delta in the United States. Boston-Venice and Detroit-Athens copy cities the airline already serves, then hang them on hubs that did not have the nonstop. Partnerships with Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, and other carriers still sit behind all three, which is how a seasonal A330 becomes a one-stop ticket beyond Venice, Athens, or Paris.
The Calendar and the Crowds Still Collide
Delta’s 2027 Europe plan is a longer season, two extra gateways into famous cities, and a first long-haul from Austin. Minneapolis and Detroit can reach Rome in March. Boston can reach Venice without a change of planes. Detroit can reach Athens without a stop in Atlanta or New York.
Venice is, at the same time, trying to make casual day visits less automatic, and its budget office wants 2027’s price to sting in a way 5 euros does not. Overnight guests on the new Boston flight will not buy that ticket. They will still arrive in a historic center that is asking the national government for a heavier lever, and they will arrive in a season Venice has already learned to meter with QR codes.
Athens is the other half of the same bet: a fourth U.S. nonstop into a capital that funnels island trips as well as city stays, on a smaller A330, three days a week. The aircraft are on the books through late October. The fee Venice wants for 2027 is not.
