Bass Persuades Takes the Record Drop After a No. 1 Debut

Bass Persuades fell 156 places after a sales-heavy 61,000-unit No. 1, even as 1.5 million people queued for two sold-out Hollywood Bowl shows.

Bass Persuades fell from No. 1 to No. 157 on the Billboard 200, a 156-place drop after a 61,000-unit debut. Luminate logged those units in the United States for the week ending Sept. 24, on the chart dated Oct. 3, giving Miley her first album to lead the list since Bangerz in October 2013.

The same campaign sold out two Hollywood Bowl dates for Oct. 16 and Oct. 18 after show organizers put 1.5 million people in the presale queues. The chart and the box office are not describing the same kind of demand.

Bass Persuades Falls 156 Places in One Week

No album that opened at No. 1 has fallen farther in its second week. The full Billboard 200 made that plain once the list below the Sunday top 10 was posted, and Bass Persuades was not in that top 10.

Steeper plunges from No. 1 exist, but they were not debut weeks. Bon Jovi’s This House Is Not for Sale went from No. 1 to No. 169 in 2018 after a ticket-bundle return of a 2016 album, a tactic Billboard and Luminate later banned. Travis Scott’s Days Before Rodeo left the chart after a late vinyl shipment of a tape that had already been out for years.

Miley’s 10th studio album, her first for Atlantic Records after Columbia and the first billed under the mononym Miley, won a much thinner race. It beat Ella Langley’s Dandelion by about 70 units. Dandelion held at No. 2 that week with nearly 61,000 units, up 1%.

THE TWO WEEKS ON THE BOARD

  1. September 18, 2026: Bass Persuades arrives, with the title track already at No. 35 on the Hot 100 dated Sept. 19, her 24th top 40 hit.
  2. September 24, 2026: Tracking closes on 61,000 equivalent album units, her sixth Billboard 200 No. 1 and 16th top 10, counting work billed as Miley, Miley Cyrus, and Hannah Montana.
  3. October 3, 2026: The dated chart places the album at No. 1.
  4. October 6, 2026: The next full list puts it at No. 157 as she posts Hollywood Bowl rehearsal photos.

Early forecasts sat around 40,000 to 45,000 units, which would have left her outside the top five. The final 61,000 cleared the high end of that range by 16,000 and still ranked among the smaller No. 1 weeks of her career. Endless Summer Vacation opened at No. 3 in 2023 with 119,000 units, about twice this total, in a more crowded week.

Why Did Bass Persuades Drop From No. 1?

The No. 1 was a purchase week. Of the 61,000 units, 47,000 were album sales and 14,000 were streaming-equivalent albums, equal to 14.22 million on-demand official streams of the songs. Track-equivalent albums were a negligible sum. That is 77% sales and 23% streams, a mix that wins a quiet week and then has little left once the variants are gone.

Under current Luminate rules for the Billboard 200, 1,000 paid streams equal one album unit, as do 2,500 ad-supported streams, while 10 track sales also equal one unit. A bought LP still counts as one full unit. A sales-heavy debut is a one-week event unless the songs keep playing.

SAME WEEK, THREE NEW ALBUMS

Album Artist Units Album sales Streaming units Rank
Bass Persuades Miley 61,000 47,000 14,000 No. 1
That’s Just Me Riley Green 60,000 29,000 30,000 No. 3
Pylon beabadoobee 35,000 25,000 10,000 No. 7

Green finished two places below her with 60,000 units and more than twice the streams, 30.89 million against 14.22 million. Jhené Aiko’s Westside Whimsy, the prior No. 1, fell 1-8 with 35,000 units, down 53%, and still sat in the top 10. Bass Persuades did not.

The title track peaked at No. 35 before the album arrived. Reviews kept circling the same mismatch: a lead single that talked about dancing, then a short record that spent more time on devotion and ballads. Aggregated critics gave it a generally favorable score of 63 from nine reviews, mixed more than hostile, and not a streaming engine.

Something Beautiful, from 2025, already sketched the pattern. It debuted and peaked at No. 4 on the chart dated June 14 with 44,000 units, dropped to No. 102 in week 2, and left the list in week 3.

Sixteen Vinyl Variants and a 70-Unit Win

Atlantic treated the first week like a retail campaign. The label cut the digital album price and stacked physical and download editions until the 70-unit gap over Dandelion was enough. Miley posted instrumental and a cappella editions of all 10 tracks on Sept. 22, still inside the tracking week, plus a Miley Edition on iTunes with a bonus cut, Smile.

WHAT COUNTED IN THE FIRST WEEK

  • Vinyl run: 16 variants, one with a bonus track.
  • CD run: nine variants, one with a bonus track.
  • Downloads: six variants, most with bonus tracks.
  • Tape: one cassette.
  • Extra audio: instrumental and a cappella editions of every track, issued Sept. 22.
  • Miley Edition: iTunes copy with Smile and a digital booklet.

That stack is 32 counted formats before the extra audio packs. Luminate’s physical recap for week 38, the same Sept. 18-24 window, put Bass Persuades at No. 1 in all physical retail with 38,325 physical copies in its debut week, including 24,942 on vinyl, the largest vinyl debut of September. Online and direct-to-consumer channels took 62.1% of that physical total. Independent shops moved 6,778 copies, 5,586 of them vinyl. Subtract physical from the 47,000 album sales and 8,675 digital albums remain.

On Sept. 29 she wrote that “Bass Persuades being #1 transcends a win,” and thanked Atlantic, her team, and fans. The floral No. 1 wreath had already gone to her house. The hold never arrived.

The Drops That Came With Asterisks

Female No. 1s have fallen hard before. They have not fallen like this in week 2.

FALLS FROM NO. 1

Album Artist Move When What the week was
Bass Persuades Miley No. 1 to No. 157 2026 Second week after a debut
Courage Celine Dion No. 1 to No. 111 2019 Previous female mark
Madame X Madonna No. 1 to No. 77 2019 Earlier female mark
This House Is Not for Sale Bon Jovi No. 1 to No. 169 2018 Ticket-bundle return, not a debut
Days Before Rodeo Travis Scott No. 1 to off the list 2024 Late vinyl of a years-old tape

Bon Jovi’s first crash, back in 2016, was No. 1 to No. 43, then a slow fade, before the 2018 bundle stunt brought it back for one more week at the top. Elvis’s Christmas Album once went from No. 1 to off the chart in the 1950s, when the album list had 25 entries, not 200. The Billboard 200 has held 200 titles since 1967.

Miley is the third act in 2026 to wait at least 10 years between No. 1 albums, after Bruno Mars and A$AP Rocky. The wait is real. The week-2 audience still has to show up in streams, and this album’s songs did not.

Hollywood Bowl Dates Sold Out in Minutes

The live market moved in the other direction. The two shows, billed as Miley: Bass Persuades, Live at the Hollywood Bowl, are her first public concerts in four years, her first time on that stage, and the only dates on the calendar. The venue holds about 18,000 people a night. Model/Actriz, who appear on Different Religion and the closing remix, open both nights.

Show organizers said 1.5 million people entered the presale queues. Ticketmaster listed face values from $93.15 to $1,000, including fees, with a four-ticket cap. Both dates sold out within 10 minutes of going on sale. Zane Lowe told her she would need a residency of 80 Bowl shows to match that queue.

That’s kind of what my idea was. This is the ultimate dress rehearsal. I’ve learned now through the queue that my calculations are correct and people will come to me. I don’t need to drive to you.

Miley, speaking with Zane Lowe

She has sworn off a traditional tour. The Bowl is 10 minutes from home, and the two nights function as a test of whether fans will travel to her. Billy Ray Cyrus backed the mononym in public, writing that he had mentioned Dolly and Cher, then Elvis and Prince, and calling it “a natural progression for an iconic superstar legend.”

Collectors bought color vinyl. Concert buyers fought a two-night inventory. Streaming listeners, the group that keeps an album in the top 50, were the thin slice. The people in that Ticketmaster line were not required to open a music app on a Tuesday in week 2, and the chart recorded that fact with a straight face.

She Posted Rehearsal Photos as the Chart Moved

On Oct. 1 she put out the Different Religion video, featuring Model/Actriz, “to celebrate BP the album being #1 this week.” On Oct. 6, the day the full second-week list circulated, she posted Bowl rehearsal shots and a short line, “See you soon.” She has not addressed the fall to No. 157.

The album, she wrote on release day, “happened fast but that’s been my life for 20 years,” a record about landing in Los Angeles and starting to slow down. Let’s Get Married, the second video, is part of that domestic frame. None of that needed a 32-format first week to be true, and none of it put 30 million streams behind the songs.

Oct. 16 is her first night on the Hollywood Bowl stage. The album that opened at No. 1 sits at No. 157 while she rehearses the same songs for a sold-out house.
