Zoe Kazan Restores the Cathy Ames East of Eden Cut
Zoe Kazan’s seven-episode Netflix East of Eden puts Florence Pugh’s Cathy Ames at the center the 1955 James Dean film treated as backstory.
Netflix released all seven episodes of East of Eden on October 1, 2026, with Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames. Zoe Kazan wrote and created the limited series from John Steinbeck’s novel, the same book her grandfather Elia Kazan filmed in 1955 as a James Dean vehicle built from the last part of the text.
The new series starts earlier, stays with Cathy, and asks the question the Dean film could only imply: whether a person can choose against the damage they inherit. That is a different East of Eden than the one most viewers already know.

Three Screen Edens in 71 Years
Steinbeck’s novel was published on September 19, 1952. He called it two books at once, “the story of my country and the story of me,” and later treated it as the work everything else had been practice for. Screen versions have never agreed on which of those books to film.
Elia Kazan’s Warner Bros. picture opened on March 9, 1955, ran 117 minutes, and followed Cal Trask, played by Dean, through the novel’s final movement in the Salinas Valley. Jo Van Fleet played Cathy as Kate, the brothel keeper Cal tracks down, and won Best Supporting Actress for East of Eden at the 1956 Oscars. The first generation of Trask brothers, Cathy’s girlhood, and Lee, the Chinese American cook who argues the book’s theology, stayed on the page.
ABC tried the whole plot in 1981, in an eight-hour miniseries that ran February 8 through 11, with Jane Seymour as Cathy. Netflix’s version is the third, arriving 71 years after Dean and 45 years after Seymour, and it chooses a third center of gravity.
THREE EAST OF EDENS
| Year | Version | Who it centers | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1955 | Warner Bros. film, 117 minutes | James Dean as Cal | The novel’s last part |
| 1981 | ABC miniseries, 8 hours | Jane Seymour as Cathy | The full book |
| 2026 | Netflix, 7 episodes | Florence Pugh as Cathy | The Trask saga; Hamiltons reduced |
Kazan has said the 1955 film felt like a different beast from the novel, loose enough that she did not feel she was stepping on her grandfather’s toes. She first read the book at 15 and claimed it in her head long before the rights moved. “That one belongs to me,” she said. Elia Kazan died in 2003. The series that carries his surname now opens on a beaten woman crawling toward a farmhouse, not on a restless son in a field.
Cathy Ames Arrives Beaten and Stays
Cathy Ames is the character Steinbeck’s narrator calls a psychic monster and then keeps circling, as if even he cannot hold the verdict. Kazan wrote the part for Pugh after seeing her in Midsommar, and Pugh also executive produces. The series lets her be victim, liar, criminal, and destroyer in the same hour, and it does not ask the audience to like her for it.
Episode 2, titled “Cathy,” lays out the girlhood the 1955 film never staged: a suitor driven to suicide, a house set on fire, parents burned, a pimp who beats her and dumps her on the Trask road. Adam Trask, played by Christopher Abbott, takes her in. Charles Trask, played by Mike Faist, does not. Kazan has said she wanted Cathy rooted in the novel and still unfolded into a person rather than an archetype, which meant changing how the book assigns blame for the violence done to her as a child without washing her later crimes.
One of the things I’ve taken pride in is being able to give unlikable characters another chance.

On screen she says she once imagined growing small enough that bad things could not find her, because the world is so full of evil. That line is the series in miniature. Survival becomes shapeshifting, then domination. When Cathy takes over Faye’s brothel under the name Kate, money and sex finally run on her terms, and she recreates the same cruelty from the other side of the ledger. Power does not heal her. Pugh plays the contradiction without sanding it into a thesis about hurt people, which is why the performance is already being treated as awards bait and why some Steinbeck readers hear a plea the novel refused to make.
Why Charles Distrusts Cathy on Sight
Adam loves a woman he has invented. Abbott plays that blindness as hunger rather than stupidity: he hears Cathy object to California, to marriage, to motherhood, and files every protest under temporary fear. Charles hears the same sentences and recognizes the con because he runs a version of it himself. “Kind recognizes kind,” Faist said of that first look.
Their father, Cyrus, played by Tracy Letts, has already split them into Abel and Cain with gifts, lies about the war, and a farm that feels like a sentence. Cathy’s arrival finishes the job. She marries Adam, sleeps with Charles while Adam is drugged, and later shoots Adam when he will not let her leave the Salinas Valley after the twins are born. The 1955 film told you she had shot him. This series makes you sit with the marriage that preceded the gun.
Faist was originally hired for the first three episodes. After Netflix saw early footage, the company added work so Charles would not vanish once the story moved west. That small commission is the series’ argument in production form: the first generation of brothers is not preamble. Cal and Aron, played by Joseph Zada and Joe Anders, inherit a pattern that only makes sense if you have watched Adam and Charles fail at it first.
The Speech 1955 Left on the Page
Lee, played by Hoon Lee, is the character Elia Kazan’s film deleted. In Steinbeck he raises the twins for years while Adam drowns in grief, then leads Samuel Hamilton through a Hebrew argument that becomes the novel’s last word. Kazan kept the racial slurs out and, with novelist Alexander Chee on one episode, unfolded Lee so the pidgin he performs for white employers reads as a mask, not a trait. Abbott has called the Adam-Lee bond the most beautiful platonic marriage in the piece, two men raising children the blood parents cannot see.
Samuel Hamilton, played by Ciarán Hinds, is the neighbor who still believes people can be better than their worst day. He and Lee linger over Genesis 4:7 until the word at the center of the book, timshel, translates to thou mayest. Lee calls it maybe the most important word there is. Kazan has said the idea opens a door: no matter what you or your ancestors did, you are obliged to think of yourself as capable of change.
The American Standard translation orders men to triumph over sin, and you can call sin ignorance. The King James translation makes a promise in Thou shalt, meaning that men will surely triumph over sin. But the Hebrew word, the word timshel, Thou mayest, that gives a choice. It might be the most important word in the world. That says the way is open. That throws it right back on a man. For if Thou mayest, it is also true that Thou mayest not.
Lee, East of Eden, John Steinbeck
That speech is how the novel Thou mayest rule over sin without promising that anyone will. The last episode takes the word as its title. Adam, dying, gives it to Cal the way the book does, as a gift that can still be refused.
Seven Episodes, Two Wars, One Family
Garth Davis directed the first four hours. Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed the last three. Kazan wrote all of them; Chee shares a credit on episode 5, “Departure.” Laura Karpman scored the series. Anonymous Content and Fifth Season produced it with Collab Productions, and all seven episodes are now streaming at once, with no weekly drip.
THE SEVEN EPISODES
| No. | Title | Director | Writer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Brothers | Garth Davis | Zoe Kazan |
| 2 | Cathy | Garth Davis | Zoe Kazan |
| 3 | In the Valley | Garth Davis | Zoe Kazan |
| 4 | Kate | Garth Davis | Zoe Kazan |
| 5 | Departure | Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre | Zoe Kazan and Alexander Chee |
| 6 | The Great Try | Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre | Zoe Kazan |
| 7 | Timshel | Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre | Zoe Kazan |
The titles themselves walk the same path as the novel: two sons, then the woman who breaks them, then California, then the madam she becomes, then the next generation’s attempt to live with what they were given. Netflix’s own logline now sells “a fiercely independent woman” driving a rift between brothers. That sentence would have been unintelligible as a description of the 1955 film, which is the point of making this version at series length.
How Much of the Hamiltons Survived
Kazan wanted eight episodes. Budget made it seven episodes. The missing hour is easiest to feel in the Hamiltons, the Irish clan modeled on Steinbeck’s own maternal line, which she largely cut even though Tom Hamilton is her favorite character in the book. Samuel remains, Liza Hamilton appears, and Will Hamilton passes through, but the second family that once balanced Steinbeck’s invented Trasks is now a neighbor, not a mirror.
That is the trade. Cathy and Lee gain interior life the earlier screen versions denied them. The novel’s other America, the Hamilton ranch and its private griefs, gets folded so the Trask cycle can land. Kazan has been blunt about other cuts that did not hurt: she kept midcentury racial slurs off the soundtrack on purpose.
WHAT KAZAN CHANGED ON PURPOSE
- Cathy’s girlhood: Violence done to her as a child is no longer offered as proof of a malformed soul, and it is not offered as a pardon for the woman she becomes.
- Lee’s mask: The cook’s pidgin and queue read as performance for employers who will not hear him any other way.
- The Hamiltons: Most of Steinbeck’s autobiographical clan is gone so the Trask story can hold seven hours.
- Charles’s share: Extra scenes were added after early footage so the first Cain does not disappear when the twins arrive.
Principal photography ran in New Zealand from October 2024 through March 2025, a cheaper stand-in for Connecticut woods and California valleys. Kazan has said she rewatched her grandfather’s film on the flight over, having avoided it while she wrote. The series is a family job in the literal sense, and she put that fact into her first pitch because, as she put it, otherwise there is a huge elephant in the room. Elia Kazan’s 1952 testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee still sits on the name. She told executives the book is about shame, inheritance, and whether you get to choose, and that she had to say so out loud.
THE ROAD TO THE PREMIERE
- 2019: Her agent asks if she wants to adapt East of Eden with more weight on Cathy. She writes back that it is her dream and her favorite book.
- June 2020: With no child care during the pandemic, she drafts in nap windows, trading three-hour shifts with Paul Dano.
- 2022: Netflix has the limited series in development, with Pugh attached to star.
- October 2024: Shooting begins in New Zealand after Abbott, Faist, and Hoon Lee join in September and the wider ensemble lands that month.
- March 2025: Production wraps.
- August 18, 2026: Netflix sets the October date and issues the first official images.
- October 1, 2026: All seven episodes go up at once.
Six years in the works, by Kazan’s count, plus twenty years of wanting the book. A viewer can now finish it in a night. That compression is the medium she chose, and it is also the limit she hit.
An 85 Percent Score, and a Fight Over Sin
Rotten Tomatoes has the season at 85 percent from 33 reviews, with an average of 7.8. Metacritic has it at 80 from 24 critics, 19 positive and 5 mixed, none filed as negative. The critics’ line on Rotten Tomatoes credits Kazan with moral quandaries and then points at Pugh and Hoon Lee as the reason this version belongs in the canon. The live argument is narrower than those scores.
THE SCOREBOARD
- Rotten Tomatoes: 85 percent from 33 reviews, average 7.8.
- Metacritic: 80 from 24 critics, generally favorable.
- Format: Seven episodes, released together on October 1, 2026.
- Span: Civil War through World War I, two generations of Trasks.
Inkoo Kang called the retelling ambitious and uneven, a feat of translation that whittles the book to what television can hold, and said Cathy’s backstory in episode 2 is a strong contender for the best hour of television this year. She also called Pugh’s Cathy a gothic villain you cannot help but root for. That last clause is the fight. Spencer Klavan argued that Steinbeck’s novel is about good and evil and that Kazan does not seem to see it. The objection is not that Pugh is dull. It is that understanding Cathy can start to feel like a campaign to make her watchable, which Steinbeck would not have confused with making her free.
WHERE EXPERTS DISAGREE
- Inkoo Kang: The series is uneven in sweep and precise in rooms, with episode 2 among the year’s best hours and Pugh the reason to stay.
- Spencer Klavan: Softening the good-and-evil frame misses the novel’s subject, whatever the craft.
- The Rotten Tomatoes consensus: Pugh and Lee are the expansion that justifies filming the book again.
Viewers clipping the show on X are mostly clipping Pugh: the stare, the voice, the way she turns a plea into a threat. That is a tell. The 1955 film made a star out of the unloved son. This one makes a star out of the mother who left. Both are East of Eden. They are not the same story, and the scores will not settle which one Steinbeck was writing when he carved a Hebrew word into a box for his editor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where Was Netflix’s East of Eden Filmed?
Principal photography ran in New Zealand from October 2024 to March 2025, with locations reported in Auckland, Dunedin, and Oamaru on the South Island, standing in for Connecticut and the Salinas Valley. Kazan has described the country as a cheaper stand-in for California, and she used the flight there to rewatch Elia Kazan’s 1955 film for the first time since she had finished her scripts.
Did Jane Seymour Win an Award for Playing Cathy Ames?
Seymour won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Miniseries for the 1981 ABC East of Eden, a three-part, eight-hour version that, unlike the 1955 film, staged Cathy’s full rise from the Ames household to the Salinas brothel. She later told Oprah Winfrey there is nothing greater than playing evil incarnate, a reading Kazan and Pugh deliberately refuse even as they keep Cathy’s worst acts on screen.
What Does Timshel Mean, and Is Steinbeck’s Spelling Accurate?
In the novel, Lee’s scholars render the word as “thou mayest,” a choice rather than the King James promise “thou shalt” or the American Standard command “do thou.” The Hebrew of Genesis 4:7 is timshol, “you shall rule,” and Steinbeck’s timshel is his own carving; his son Thomas later said a slip of the chisel on the manuscript box may have turned the vowel. The 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation, which Steinbeck cited to his editor, does give “thou mayest rule over it,” which was enough for him.
How Long Are the East of Eden Episodes on Netflix?
Episodes run 51 to 68 minutes, so a full sitting is shorter than the 1981 miniseries’ eight hours and much longer than the 117-minute 1955 film. Kazan asked for eight episodes and was held to seven, which is why the Hamilton material is the first thing that falls off the table when the runtime gets tight.
Is Samuel Hamilton Based on a Real Person?
Samuel Hamilton is drawn from Steinbeck’s maternal grandfather, and the Hamilton ranch chapters are the “story of me” half of the novel, complete with a brief appearance by Steinbeck as a child. Kazan’s series keeps Samuel, played by Ciarán Hinds, as Adam’s neighbor and Lee’s partner in the timshel debate, while cutting most of that autobiographical clan so the Trasks and Cathy can occupy the seven hours.
