United Prices Its Status Match in 90-Day Spend

United’s Delta and American status match is a 90-day spend test of $1,500 to $7,000, locking Premier perks through January 31, 2028 if you fly United metal.

United opened a 90-day status match on October 1 for Delta and American elites, with spend gates of $1,500 to $7,000. Requests close October 15. Buy and fly that sum on United or United Express and the matched Premier tier lasts through January 31, 2028.

The ads sell Starlink. The offer sells a compressed trial on United metal, timed to the last quarter of the year, and it is cheaper than earning the same card the usual way.

United Priced the Match in Base Fares

Approved members get the mapped MileagePlus Premier level for 90 days from the approval date. Status starts one to three business days after United says yes. United says it will answer within three business days if you file proof of current Delta SkyMiles Medallion or American AAdvantage elite status.

You apply on the Switch To Better Wi-Fi match form. The account address has to be in the United States. Earned status and lifetime status count. Trial, temporary, and promotional status do not. United will not match you if you already hold the same Premier level or a higher one.

United told Live and Let’s Fly this is its “most flexible and straightforward status match yet.” Henry Harteveldt, founder of Atmosphere Research Group, put it in plainer terms.

This is war, airline style. It’s very rare for an airline to be as blatant as United is being.

The year-round MileagePlus challenge is still a separate product, with flight-and-points tests and a longer review. This overlay is cash, speed, and a named target list: Delta and American only.

What It Costs to Keep Status Through 2028

The trial is free. The lock-in is not. You have to purchase and take the qualifying tickets inside the 90 days. A spring booking that sits unused does not count, and tickets for family members do not count either.

THE SPEND GATES BY TIER

United match Delta status American status Buy-and-fly in 90 days
Premier Silver Silver Medallion AAdvantage Gold $1,500
Premier Gold Gold Medallion AAdvantage Platinum $3,000
Premier Platinum Platinum Medallion AAdvantage Platinum Pro $4,500
Premier 1K Diamond Medallion and Delta 360° Executive Platinum and ConciergeKey $7,000

Spending past your mapped gate does not lift you a tier. A Diamond member who puts $10,000 on United still finishes as 1K, not Global Services, which stays invitation-only.

Only the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges on your own United or United Express tickets count, including the cash slice of a Money + Miles ticket. Taxes, codeshares on other airlines, Economy Plus, seat fees, and paid upgrades are out. During the trial, some partner perks, including Star Alliance lounge access, may not work. Finish Premier Platinum and United adds 20 PlusPoints. Finish 1K and it adds 100. That is a partial pile, not the full load members get when they qualify the ordinary way.

The Wi-Fi Pitch Runs Ahead of the Fleet

United branded the raid “Switch To Better Wi-Fi” after a public fight over Delta’s next network. On March 31, 2026, Delta chose Amazon Leo, with installs slated to start in 2028 on 500 aircraft. CEO Ed Bastian has said Amazon brings retailing, Prime, and gaming tech that Starlink does not, and that the price was lower.

Notes from a company event, posted secondhand by an aviation commentator who said he could not verify the wording, claimed Bastian told staff Delta did not want to partner with Elon Musk. Musk answered that Bastian “will lose his job over this,” then joked that the way to cut an AI off from the internet was to put it on a Delta flight. The reported staff remarks remain unconfirmed. The product gap is not.

STARLINK ON UNITED RIGHT NOW

  • Fleet share: Independent counts show Starlink on 609 of 1,672 aircraft, or 36 percent, with 50 installs in the last 30 days.
  • Who flies it free: MileagePlus members get Starlink at no charge on equipped jets; other Wi-Fi on the rest of the fleet still starts at $8 a flight.
  • United’s score: The airline says customer satisfaction is up more than 40 points on average on Starlink flights.
  • The lag: American has signed for Starlink but is not flying it yet. Delta’s Leo work does not start until 2028.

United made the pitch official on October 1, pointing defectors at the same match form.

The Wi-Fi line will fail on a lot of United trips. Most of the fleet still lacks Starlink, including older mainline jets that keep the paid connection. People who already like Starlink on United Express and A321neo flights still pause before they drop a card they use every week, especially American Executive Platinum. Fortress hubs, nonstop banks, and the phone tree on a missed connection still decide more of this than a satellite dish.

American Already Runs a Broader Match

American does not need a Musk fight to copy the tactic. An American spokeswoman said the airline “consistently offer[s] status pass promotions,” and the public page already takes Delta, United, JetBlue, and Southwest elites. Review takes at least four weeks. Matched, transferred, lifetime, and promotional cards are out on that side.

UNITED VERSUS AMERICAN, SIDE BY SIDE

Rule United, this offer American Instant Status Pass
Who can file Delta and American elites, U.S. address Delta, United, JetBlue, Southwest
First grant 90 days after a 3-business-day review 4 months after a 4-week review
Keep it $1,500 to $7,000 buy-and-fly on United metal 13,000 to 67,000 Loyalty Points each 4-month phase
How long if you finish Through January 31, 2028 Rest of the membership year after the goals

American’s Instant Status Pass match chart maps Delta Silver to AAdvantage Gold, Gold to Platinum, Platinum to Platinum Pro, and Diamond to Executive Platinum, with Loyalty Point goals of 13,000, 25,000, 42,000, and 67,000. You have to hit a goal every four months, three times, to keep going. Delta status on that chart has to expire in January 2028. United’s special window is narrower, faster, and priced in cash you already planned to put on a plane.

Some Delta elites will file with American anyway, because the net is wider and the first grant lasts four months. United is betting they would rather know in three business days, then burn Q4 trips on its own metal before the 90 days run out.

Tickets That Do Not Count Toward the Gate

The fine print is the conversion machine. It forces spend onto flights United actually operates, in a window that starts when the match is approved, not when you meant to travel.

WHAT THE 90 DAYS WILL NOT TAKE

  • Other people’s tickets: Fares for family or colleagues do not build your total. The passenger has to be you.
  • Paper itineraries: A paid ticket for next spring that you have not flown yet does not count, even if the fare is large.
  • Partner metal: Codeshares on other airlines are out. It has to be United or United Express.
  • Extras: Taxes, Economy Plus, seat fees, and paid upgrades sit outside the gate.
  • A higher card: Extra spend cannot buy a tier above the one United mapped from Delta or American.

That is why the match is a weak gift and a strong test. If your next three months of work trips already touch Chicago, Denver, Houston, Newark, or San Francisco, the cash is sitting in the calendar. If your life is built around Atlanta, Dallas, or a Delta shuttle bank, you would be manufacturing flying to rent a card you may not use in 2027.

Prior MileagePlus matches can also get in the way on the year-round program, which bars another challenge for three years. People who already used that door earlier in 2026 are asking United to waive it. This overlay’s published terms do not spell out that same wait, so the safe read is to check the form before you count on a second shot.

A $7,000 Path Undercuts the Usual 1K Bar

United’s ordinary 1K chart still asks for 60 Premier qualifying flights and 22,000 published Premier qualifying points, or 28,000 points with no extra flight count beyond four United or United Express trips. Silver is 15 flights and 5,000 points, or 6,000 points alone. The match asks for $7,000 in base fare for 1K, or $1,500 for Silver, inside 90 days, then hands you the card through January 31, 2028.

That is the second move behind the Wi-Fi ads. United is not giving away 2027 status. It is selling a short, own-metal exam at a cash number a heavy traveler can hit without inventing trips, then keeping that person inside MileagePlus through the next full program year. PlusPoints on completion stay thin: 20 at Platinum against 40 when you qualify in the usual way, and 100 at 1K against 280 more after you reach that tier on the published chart.

The request window closes October 15, 2026. The flying has to be bought and taken inside 90 days of approval, on United’s own aircraft, at the mapped spend. Miss either clock and the trial ends on day 91.
