Hamilton’s Ferrari Upgrade Pushes Mercedes Into a Monza Bind
Ferrari’s Zandvoort floor left Hamilton fourth, yet Mercedes will start title leader Kimi Antonelli last at Monza with 11 races remaining.
Lewis Hamilton finished fourth at Zandvoort in Ferrari’s upgraded SF-26, 16.755 seconds behind winner Lando Norris. Mercedes locked second and third, and Kimi Antonelli’s lead over Hamilton is now 59 points with 11 races left.
The floor package that arrived after the summer break did not buy a podium. It did change how Mercedes will spend the rest of 2026, and that bill comes due at Monza this Sunday, when the title leader starts last on home soil.
A New Floor Finished Fourth at Zandvoort
The last Dutch Grand Prix, run on 23 August 2026, went to Norris after a red-flag start and a late Virtual Safety Car. Max Verstappen crashed out on the opening lap. Hamilton started fifth and finished fourth. Charles Leclerc started sixth and finished fifth. Both Ferraris gained one place and still left the podium to George Russell, who held them off after Mercedes swapped its own cars.
DUTCH GRAND PRIX TOP SIX
| Pos | Driver | Team | Gap | Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lando Norris | McLaren | 2:04:44.859 | 25 |
| 2 | Kimi Antonelli | Mercedes | +11.536s | 18 |
| 3 | George Russell | Mercedes | +15.906s | 15 |
| 4 | Lewis Hamilton | Ferrari | +16.755s | 12 |
| 5 | Charles Leclerc | Ferrari | +17.258s | 10 |
| 6 | Oscar Piastri | McLaren | +32.332s | 8 |
That is the official 72-lap race result, and it left Ferrari with 22 points on Sunday plus nine from Saturday’s sprint. Team principal Frédéric Vasseur called the race pace decent and the execution imperfect, pointing to a slow stop and a lost place to Piastri at the second start. Hamilton, in the team’s own debrief, thanked the factory for the upgrades and still said the team had to do more to stay in the fight.
Leclerc set the fastest lap at 1:14.230. Hamilton’s best was 1:14.566, and he was 0.849 seconds from Russell at the flag, close enough that the podium was a strategy problem, not a missing wing.
What Ferrari Sent to the Dutch GP
Pre-race notes in Italy billed an all-new chassis for Hamilton. What Ferrari logged for the weekend was a third SF-26 aero step, split from a larger plan so the parts that were ready could run after the factory shutdown.
FERRARI’S FIVE CHANGES AT ZANDVOORT
- Floor body: Aimed at more aero load across the working range and a more stable flow to the rear.
- Floor board: Revised with the body to feed the diffuser with higher energy air.
- Floor edge: Trimmed at the extremities; a further lateral-edge piece is still due later in the year.
- Diffuser: New expansion profile and stay layout, sold as more load without losing flow stability.
- Beam wing: A small change to match the new diffuser and clean the flow off the rear.
The package is a direct follow-on from the Barcelona step that gave Hamilton his first Ferrari win, on 14 June, when Antonelli retired and the seven-time champion closed to 41 points. Zandvoort was meant to prove the same car could carry load through a tight, banked lap. Qualifying said otherwise. Norris took pole in 1:11.163. Hamilton’s Q3 lap was 1:11.494, fifth, 0.331 seconds away. Leclerc was sixth at 1:11.558.
Ferrari’s own weekend file lists a fourth place for Lewis Hamilton and a fifth for Leclerc, and Vasseur said the gap that hurt them was Saturday, not Sunday. The rest of the floor edge is still sitting in the plan for a later race, which is how a “new chassis” story became a half-step that left both red cars on the third row.
Mercedes Swapped Cars With Ferraris Closing In
Mercedes did not beat Norris. It did beat Ferrari, and it did it by treating Hamilton and Leclerc as the cars that mattered. Antonelli had been second when the Virtual Safety Car came. He pitted. Russell stayed out and inherited the place. On lap 65 of 72 the pit wall told Russell to let Antonelli back through.
Russell did it, then warned that the swap might have “lost a double podium” as the Ferraris arrived on fresher tyres. He kept both of them behind and finished third. Antonelli scored 18 points. The title leader left Zandvoort 59 points clear of both Russell and Hamilton, who are tied on 183.
I think this is the policy that we always have, and we discussed it many times and also in the morning. We’re not losing time with each other and having Ferraris breathing down our neck. Especially before the inverting, Kimi was ahead, he didn’t need to pit, so George ended where he ended, with the threat of the Ferraris obviously. So the switch was the logical consequence.
Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal, on F1 TV
Hamilton had already boiled over on the radio when Leclerc, on older tyres, sat in his way. “Great waste of time there, guys,” he said, and he asked whether the desk was using him as a guinea pig after he was left out while Norris and Antonelli came past. Vasseur later said the silence was on purpose. Ferrari did not want the other pits to hear the call, wanted Hamilton to stay out until the late VSC, and then extended Leclerc by a lap and created, in Vasseur’s word, confusion.
Mercedes, from the same afternoon, looked like a team that has already decided who the 25-point car is. That call is the first half of the shift the floor package forced. The second half is money.
The Development Fight Has Mercedes Stuck
Wolff did not dress up the Dutch weekend as a win. He said Mercedes thought it had the pace to take the race until the hard tyre, did not understand why that dropped off, and still called P2 and P3 acceptable because the team outscored Ferrari. Then he named the bind. “It’s a development fight, and at the moment we are a bit stuck,” he said. “The upgrades are still a little bit away.”
He has been blunter on the budget. Mercedes, he said, has not got the money to keep throwing parts at the car the way Ferrari and McLaren have since Monaco, and is trying to spread its spend so the biggest updates land when they buy the most points. The FIA’s 2026 team financial rules set a $215 million cost cap for a season of 24 races or fewer. Driver pay and the three highest staff salaries sit outside it. Aero floors and extra chassis batches do not.
That is why an aggressive Ferrari programme in the middle of the year lands as a problem in Brackley even when Hamilton finishes fourth. Every new floor Ferrari can still afford is a round Mercedes may not match. McLaren has already cashed two wins in a row, Hungary then Zandvoort, while the two title cars spent Sunday fighting each other. A fresh Mercedes engine at Monza will help on the straights, which is why a slice of the paddock talks as if Antonelli will simply drive through the field. A last-place start still gives whoever qualifies in front a clear run at 25 points, and Hamilton’s race pace last Sunday says Ferrari can take that run if the pit wall does not donate it.
Why Antonelli Starts Last at Monza
Antonelli is 20 and has led this championship since the spring. He had seven wins by Hungary. He has one win in the last six races. Reliability, not Hamilton, is the reason Mercedes is now taking the hit at home.
MERCEDES PLAN B TIMELINE
- June 14, 2026: Hamilton wins in Barcelona after Antonelli’s Mercedes loses power, the same sudden shutdown Russell had already suffered in Montreal.
- June 19, 2026: Wolff says the pair can no longer race each other if a third car is in the fight, after Barcelona became the first Grand Prix Mercedes lost in 2026.
- August 23, 2026: Mercedes inverts Russell and Antonelli on lap 65 at Zandvoort with both Ferraris on the gearbox, and Wolff calls the swap the logical consequence.
- September 6, 2026: Antonelli takes a full power-unit change at Monza and will start his home race at the back of the grid.
Wolff confirmed the drop in Zandvoort and spelled out the logic later. “With Kimi, we’re taking the full thing. Our calculations say that that’s the best track to take it,” he said. “Obviously, algorithms don’t take their nationality into consideration. We’re here to fight for a championship and not get the most PR.” Russell’s own extra engine is still under discussion. The sporting rules impose the grid hit at the first event where the extra parts are used, a minimum of 10 places, and a full set of new elements puts a driver at the back no matter where he qualifies.
Monza is a poor place to charge a battery and a good place to pass. That is the calculation. It is also Ferrari’s home race, and Hamilton has said he is excited to go there, calling it a special place with memories he will not forget. He is 41. An eighth title would make him the oldest champion since 1957. Antonelli is on course to be the youngest if the lead holds. This weekend puts the youngest lead and the oldest chase on the same grid with the lead car at the tail.
59 Points Separate Hamilton From the Lead
Hungary left Antonelli on 219 and Hamilton on 169, a 50-point gap, with Mercedes 72 clear of Ferrari in the constructors’. Zandvoort widened both. Antonelli scored 5 sprint points and 18 on Sunday. Hamilton scored 2 and 12. Russell’s sprint win (8 points) plus 15 on Sunday pulled him level with Hamilton on 183.
DRIVERS’ STANDINGS AFTER ZANDVOORT
| Pos | Driver | Team | Points | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kimi Antonelli | Mercedes | 242 | Leader |
| 2 | George Russell | Mercedes | 183 | 59 |
| 3 | Lewis Hamilton | Ferrari | 183 | 59 |
| 4 | Lando Norris | McLaren | 159 | 83 |
| 5 | Charles Leclerc | Ferrari | 155 | 87 |
Mercedes has 425 constructors’ points. Ferrari has 338. The gap is 87. McLaren sits third on 263 after Norris’s second win of the year. Twelve of 23 rounds are done. Eleven remain, plus one more sprint. A win is still 25 points. Hamilton can eat the 59 if Mercedes has another shutdown and Ferrari stops leaking places on the radio. He cannot eat it if Monza is another fourth and fifth while Antonelli climbs into the points from the pit lane.
The Italian Grand Prix runs 4 to 6 September at Monza, with lights out on Sunday. Madrid follows a week later, then Baku, Sepang, Singapore and the Americas. Wolff has already said Monza and Madrid open a harder stretch, with the field compressed and the price of a mistake up. Ferrari still has a power-unit step on the Monza to-do list under the ADUO tokens, and the SF-26’s remaining floor edge is pencilled for a later flyaway. None of that landed in time for Zandvoort.
Antonelli will start his home race from down the order because Mercedes would rather take the penalty on a straight-line track than risk another Barcelona-style retirement. Hamilton will start wherever Saturday puts him, in a car that was fast enough to worry Russell on old tyres and messy enough to need a radio row to get past its own teammate. First practice at Monza is Friday.
