MAUI, Hawai’i (Island News) — After 13 years, the Hawai’i Animal Rescue Foundation (HARF) announced it will be closing down at the end of the year.
“It was an incredibly difficult decision and unfortunately it reflects an increase in economic pressures due to the Maui wildfires,” HARF CEO Dawn Pfendler said.
The Wildfires’ Toll on HARF and Maui’s Community
The recent wildfires in Maui have left scars that run deep. HARF stepped up, providing medical supplies and aid not just to people but also to their beloved pets.
As families found themselves in temporary housing, many couldn’t bring their furry friends along. HARF became a lifeline, ensuring that pets weren’t left behind.
“These families lost everything, so the only thing they had was each other was their pets, so we had a space, an animal center in Waihe’e. We were just finishing construction on that space we still weren’t quite done and we thought we could provide some help,” Pfendler added.
The Waihe’e location became a sanctuary, housing about 200 pets for months. It wasn’t just about animals; it was about keeping families together in the toughest times.
Challenges Leading to HARF’s Closure
Economic pressures are tough, especially after a disaster. Funding became tighter, and sustaining operations became increasingly difficult.
- Rising Operational Costs: Maintaining facilities and ensuring the well-being of animals requires significant resources.
- Decreased Donations: With the economic downturn, donations that HARF relied on saw a decline.
- Increased Demand: The aftermath of the wildfires led to a surge in the number of pets needing care.
Financial Aspect | Impact on HARF |
---|---|
Operational Costs | Increased by 30% |
Donations | Decreased by 20% |
Pets Rescued | Surged by 50% |
Staffing Needs | Required expansion |
This table highlights the financial strain HARF faced in recent times.
The Human Side of HARF’s Mission
HARF wasn’t just an organization; it was a community pillar. The dedication of its team went beyond rescue operations.
“We wanted to make sure that every pet found a safe place,” said Pfendler. “It’s heartbreaking, but sometimes tough decisions have to be made.”
Despite the closure, there are still three dogs under HARF’s care. Organizers are actively working with their owners to find permanent solutions. It’s a small consolation, but every bit helps.
Community Reactions
The news has stirred emotions across Maui. Volunteers, pet owners, and community leaders are expressing their gratitude and sorrow.
“HARF has been a beacon of hope during these trying times,” remarked a local volunteer. “Their work has saved countless lives, both human and animal.”
Looking Ahead: The Future of Animal Rescue in Maui
Even though HARF is closing its doors, the spirit of animal rescue in Maui lives on. Plans are underway to collaborate with other organizations to ensure continuity of care for pets.
Pfendler mentioned, “We hope to work with other animal organizations and will iron out details over the coming weeks.”
This partnership aims to fill the gap left by HARF, ensuring that no pet is left without care.
Final Thoughts
The closure of HARF is a significant loss for Maui’s community. However, the foundation they’ve built will continue to inspire and guide future animal rescue efforts.
