In a vibrant celebration of Engineer’s Day, CEPT University in Ahmedabad hosted a two-day event that brought together students, faculty, and industry leaders to discuss the evolving challenges of engineering and explore innovative solutions. The event showcased the university’s dedication to fostering creativity, sustainability, and practical learning in the fields of engineering, architecture, and real estate.
The event was marked by an array of activities, including competitions, installations, workshops, and panel discussions, all aimed at empowering future engineers and addressing the real-world challenges the industry faces today.
A Platform for Creative Engineering: Competitions and Installations
The event kicked off with a remarkable display of creativity and innovation through a series of competitions. Students from educational institutes across Ahmedabad gathered to participate in the ‘Deciphering Real Estate 2050’ competition. This inter-university contest encouraged participants to imagine the future of Indian cities, blending futuristic thinking with scientific principles.
The competition’s emphasis on merging creativity with practicality inspired students to propose visionary ideas for India’s urban landscape in 2050. CEPT students Jenish Kathariya and Utkarsh Agarwal secured the top two positions, while Mudra Bhatt from Nirma University claimed the third spot.
Alongside the competition, CEPT students presented awe-inspiring installations that highlighted the role of architecture and engineering in creating dynamic spaces. One such installation, the Dynamic Wall, featured moving acrylic bricks forming fluid, wave-like patterns that seamlessly transformed spaces. Another standout was Eco-mist, an eco-friendly bamboo structure that integrated an evaporative cooling system, showcasing sustainable and natural design for green living.
Real-World Learning: The Role of Industry in Shaping the Future
The event didn’t just focus on student creativity; it also featured key insights from industry leaders. The second day saw a panel discussion titled Deciphering Real Estate, where prominent figures from the real estate industry shared their experiences and advice with the audience.
Panelists included Chitrak Shah, Managing Director of Shivalik Group, and Shaan Zaveri, Co-Founder of Amaya Group, along with RERA Finance Expert Sarthak Bhansali, Architect Harshad Mistry, and Advocate Kirat Damani. The discussion centered on the ground realities of the real estate sector, offering students valuable perspectives on the industry’s future.
Each panelist highlighted the importance of understanding both theoretical knowledge and practical application. They discussed topics such as sustainable construction, urban planning, and the significance of adapting to the ever-changing demands of the real estate market.
Nurturing Sustainability: Tree Plantation Drive
In line with the global push towards sustainability, CEPT University also conducted a tree plantation drive in collaboration with the Indian Plumbing Association. Thirty trees were planted at the university’s girls’ hostel, symbolizing the institution’s commitment to environmental responsibility. This initiative supported the government’s Ek Ped, Maa Ke Naam campaign, aimed at promoting greenery and sustainability across India.
The tree plantation drive was a meaningful addition to the event, underscoring the university’s belief that engineers and architects have a crucial role in shaping environmentally sustainable urban environments.
Innovation in Action: Workshops and Cultural Engagement
Students and faculty at CEPT University didn’t just focus on theoretical discussions and competitions during Engineer’s Day. They actively engaged in practical learning through workshops that addressed critical topics such as fire safety. The Fire Safety Workshop provided attendees with hands-on training, enhancing their understanding of essential safety protocols.
The celebration wasn’t all work and no play, though. The two-day event included cultural performances, with a band providing entertainment for attendees. This mix of learning and leisure reflected CEPT University’s holistic approach to education, emphasizing the importance of creativity and relaxation in fostering innovative minds.
CEPT University: Pioneering Research and Education in Human Habitats
Established in 1962 as the School of Architecture and later becoming CEPT University through an act passed by the Gujarat government, the institution has grown into a premier center for the study and design of human habitats. Its mission is to improve urban environments by combining architectural excellence with sustainable planning.
In December 2023, CEPT University was recognized by the Government of India as a Centre of Excellence in Urban Planning and Design, backed by a substantial Rs. 250 Crore endowment. This funding will support the university’s ongoing research into India-specific challenges in urban development over the next 25 years.
Through its comprehensive programs in architecture, planning, technology, and design, CEPT University aims to produce thoughtful professionals who can address the real-world challenges of designing and managing human settlements. Its commitment to fostering collaboration between academia and industry ensures that students are equipped with the skills and insights needed to make a meaningful impact on the future of urban development.
