Los Alamos NJROTC Conquers Raider Challenge, Ignites Tradition

On October 26, the Los Alamos NJROTC unit made a triumphant return to Raider competitions, showcasing exceptional grit at the Extreme Raider Challenge at Los Lunas High School. After a long hiatus, the cadets demonstrated immense physical and mental strength, rekindling a spirit of camaraderie and setting the stage for a new tradition of excellence. Their performance was a powerful statement of resilience and teamwork.

A Grueling Test of Strength and Spirit

The Extreme Raider Challenge is designed to push participants to their absolute limits, drawing inspiration from intense events like Spartan races and the US Army Ranger Challenge. This is not a simple obstacle course; it is a comprehensive test of endurance, strength, and mental fortitude. Cadets were faced with a series of demanding tasks that required both individual power and cohesive teamwork to overcome.

One of the first major obstacles was a high rope wall. C/LCDR Hayden Kim and C/PO2 Jaden Kim led the team’s effort, scaling the wall with focused determination. Their swift ascent and descent set a high-energy pace for the rest of the unit. Another incredible display of power came from C/SA Abigail Sena, who tackled the massive 176-pound tire flip. She successfully flipped the tire three times before advancing, a feat that showcased her incredible strength.

Overcoming Obstacles as a United Team

The day’s most demanding trial was a 3.5-mile team march. This was no ordinary march, as the cadets had to carry a heavy log, two tires, a bucket, and 24 bottles of water, all while managing a large rock. This challenge was designed to symbolize the difficult journeys that military veterans often face, blending a tough physical task with deep symbolic meaning.

Throughout the exhausting trek, the importance of leadership and mutual support became clear. Cadets like C/LT Natalie Crawford and C/SCPO Owen Oviedo stepped up, motivating their peers and ensuring no one was left behind. Their leadership was instrumental in keeping morale high. This unity and hard work paid off, as the male team secured an impressive third-place finish among ten competing schools.

Voices from the Challenge

The impact of the event was profoundly felt by the participants. Jimmy Hardy, an army veteran and the male physical fitness team captain, described it as a transformative experience. “This was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done that I would totally do again,” he said, reflecting on how the challenge and his training helped him find new purpose.

C/LT Natalie Crawford shared a similar view. “This was the most difficult challenge I’ve ever done. But it was also the most rewarding experience,” she stated. “Our group of individuals came together to get through it and came out the other side as a united team.” Her words capture the essence of the event: building strength not just in body, but in unity.

Forging a New Legacy with Community Support

The team’s success and renewed spirit are also thanks to the support of Branded One Fitness, led by Coach Nick McCombs. Though not from a military background himself, McCombs was inspired by friends and family who served and created a supportive gym environment for veterans and cadets. His vision has been crucial in preparing the team for such demanding competitions.

The victory at Los Lunas is just the beginning. The team is already looking ahead to continue building its legacy of resilience and camaraderie.

  • January: The Raider Teams will compete at El Dorado High School in Albuquerque.
  • April: The unit will return for another challenging event in Los Lunas.

These upcoming events are more than just competitions; they are opportunities for the Los Alamos NJROTC to strengthen their bonds and continue their journey of personal and collective growth.
