Rebecca Romijn’s Time-Traveling Return as Mystique Clouds Marvel’s ‘Doomsday’ Filming Status

There’s something peculiar going on behind Marvel’s doors—and Rebecca Romijn knows it. While fans brace for what’s expected to be one of the most crossover-packed Marvel entries ever, Avengers: Doomsday is still keeping its cards frustratingly close. And the woman behind the original Mystique is just as in the dark as we are.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Romijn dropped a few breadcrumbs—just enough to raise eyebrows, but not enough to reveal the big picture. She’s not even sure if she’s done filming. That’s not a metaphor. Marvel’s script isn’t finished. And apparently, neither is she.

Filming in the Fog

Romijn didn’t mince words when asked if her work on Avengers: Doomsday was complete.

“Not quite sure,” she admitted candidly. That’s not something you expect to hear from a seasoned star talking about a tentpole film.

The reason? The script isn’t fully written. And in classic Marvel fashion, nobody’s handing out spoilers—not even to the actors.

She’s not allowed to confirm whether she’s read the whole thing. She didn’t say who she filmed scenes with. And she definitely didn’t say how it all ends. But her body language and nostalgia hinted that the experience was far more complex than the usual superhero set visit.

Old Faces, New Timeline, Stranger Dreams

Romijn described the set as “surreal,” comparing it to falling into a dream. And not the good kind.

“It was very surreal to be with my old cast as well as a new cast,” she said. Then she added something curious—she started having regressive dreams.

Crazy dreams. Dreams that took her back decades.

This wasn’t just a job. It was a head trip. Standing next to faces from her past while watching them mesh with today’s Marvel mainstays turned the set into something closer to a memory maze than a movie shoot.

She’s Not the Same Mystique—And That’s the Point

Romijn didn’t just dust off the bodysuit and show up. She returned to Mystique with something new: confidence.

The first time around, she wasn’t so sure she belonged. “I had imposter syndrome in the very beginning,” she admitted. “I thought… maybe I was just cast because I happened to be the model who was available.”

That feeling’s gone. Twenty years later, she owns the role. She knows exactly who Mystique is—and who she is too.

There’s something poetic about that. A character known for transformation, played by someone who’s finally comfortable in her own skin.

Everything Marvel Isn’t Saying

Despite Marvel’s notoriously secretive script process, a few names have surfaced. And they’re big.

  • Patrick Stewart returns as Professor X.

  • Ian McKellen is back as Magneto.

  • James Marsden steps in once again as Cyclops.

  • Alan Cumming revisits his teleporting Nightcrawler.

  • Kelsey Grammer brings Beast back to life.

It’s not a reunion. It’s a resurrection. But don’t expect Romijn to spill any details about the storyline. Marvel’s lockdown extends to who she shares scenes with, how many days she filmed, and what the hell is actually going on in the movie.

A Project Still in Motion

This isn’t typical Hollywood timing. Most blockbuster shoots don’t begin before a script is finalized.

Yet here’s Romijn, midway through a mystery shoot for a film that hasn’t locked in its final scenes.

It raises questions about Marvel’s process:

  • Is Avengers: Doomsday undergoing rewrites during production?

  • Are actors being given only the pages they need?

  • Will scenes be reshot once the script’s finally done?

Whatever the reason, it’s clear this project is evolving in real-time. And it’s not just fans being kept out of the loop. The people in the movie don’t know the ending either.
