Hyundai Rolls Out First Three-Row Electric SUV at New Georgia Plant

Hyundai is making a bold move in the electric vehicle (EV) market with its first-ever three-row electric SUV. The IONIQ 9 is rolling off production lines at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), a newly opened facility in Ellabell, Georgia. The plant, which held its grand opening on Wednesday, is expected to produce up to 500,000 electric and hybrid vehicles annually.

A Massive Investment in U.S. Manufacturing

Hyundai is betting big on American manufacturing. The HMGMA facility, located about 20 miles from Savannah, represents a significant milestone for the South Korean automaker. The company has committed $21 billion in U.S. manufacturing investments, a move expected to create 14,000 full-time jobs by 2028.

The grand opening of the plant was marked by statements from Hyundai’s leadership, emphasizing their commitment to innovation and local partnerships. “With the rich history of craftsmanship and manufacturing in this community, together with the talented workforce at HMGMA, we are building the future of mobility with America, in America,” said Euisun Chung, executive chair of Hyundai Motor Group.

The IONIQ 9: Hyundai’s New Flagship SUV

Hyundai’s latest electric SUV, the IONIQ 9, is set to hit the roads this spring. The company shared an image of employees assembling the vehicle, showcasing a green-framed model. This marks Hyundai’s foray into the competitive large electric SUV segment, where demand for family-friendly, long-range EVs is growing.

While Hyundai has been a leader in the EV market with its IONIQ lineup, the addition of a three-row model signals an effort to attract a wider customer base. Larger EVs have historically faced challenges related to range and charging infrastructure, but Hyundai aims to overcome these hurdles with advancements in battery technology.

Kia’s Role in Georgia’s Production Boom

Hyundai’s Georgia plant isn’t just about Hyundai-branded vehicles. Kia, which is partially owned by Hyundai, will account for 40% of the facility’s total production. This comes as Kia continues to expand its hybrid and electric vehicle lineup.

Kia CEO Song Ho-sung confirmed the company’s commitment to the new facility, highlighting how the production shift aligns with changing consumer preferences. Originally, Hyundai had planned for the plant to produce 300,000 electric vehicles annually, but hybrid cars were added to the mix due to cooling demand for pure EVs.

The Trump Administration’s Impact on Hyundai’s Plans

Political and economic factors are shaping Hyundai’s U.S. expansion strategy. The Trump administration recently announced a 25% tariff on imported cars and auto parts, a decision that could impact Asian automakers like Hyundai and Kia. South Korea is currently the second-largest exporter of vehicles to the U.S., trailing only Mexico.

Meanwhile, the administration has signaled potential changes to EV subsidies, adding further uncertainty to the market. Hyundai’s investment in domestic production may help insulate it from tariff-related cost increases, but the shifting political landscape remains a factor in its long-term strategy.

A Balancing Act Between Electric and Hybrid Demand

As EV adoption in the U.S. slows, Hyundai and Kia are adjusting their production strategies to maintain profitability. The move to incorporate hybrid vehicles at the Georgia plant reflects a broader trend among automakers responding to market realities.

  • The initial plan was for 300,000 EVs annually, but hybrid models were added to offset fluctuating demand.
  • Consumer hesitancy around EVs remains due to charging infrastructure and high costs.
  • The federal policy landscape continues to influence investment decisions.

By diversifying its output, Hyundai is positioning itself to capture both the traditional and electric vehicle markets while continuing its long-term shift toward sustainability.
