A new colorful caper is landing on Steam in September — and it’s coming from the hands behind Shiren the Wanderer and Pokémon. Tokyo-based developer PLANETA has announced Fruitimo!, a light-hearted action adventure about a fruit-obsessed boy and his gadget-filled android backpack.
It’s not every day that the studio behind some of Japan’s most iconic RPGs turns its attention to giant strawberries, juice rivers, and sherbet hills. But here we are.
From Dungeon Crawls to Dessert-Fueled Dreams
PLANETA might not be a household name globally, but their fingerprints are all over some very familiar titles. They’ve lent their talents to Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island, a cult classic in the roguelike genre. And yes, they also helped develop Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, two of Nintendo’s biggest sellers in recent memory.
Now, they’re pivoting to something… sweeter.
The upcoming Fruitimo! swaps dungeons for desserts. It stars Vimita, a fruit-loving boy, and his multi-purpose backpack android known only as Grandpa. Together, they explore Kajune Land, a chaotic theme park packed with oversized fruit, slippery slides, suspicious drones, and rivers made of—you guessed it—juice.
Kajune Land: Less Horror Park, More Sugar Rush
Kajune Land isn’t your typical game world. It’s more like if Willy Wonka took over Disneyland with a blender in hand.
The Steam description is refreshingly unfiltered: “juice river, sherbet hill, as well drones, robots, and even slides!” Sure, it reads like a sugar high, but that seems to be the point.
You’re not just walking around picking apples either. Vimita and Grandpa do it all—toss jelly, vacuum fruit, and use something called a search function to sniff out secrets. One moment you’re bouncing down a fruit roll slide, and the next, you’re blasting mangoes out of a cannon (we assume).
In short, it sounds like controlled chaos. And it might just work.
Not Just Cute—There’s Strategy Under the Syrup
Underneath all the fruit fluff, there’s actual gameplay variety here. Puzzle-solving, timing mechanics, and exploration all come into play. It’s not just about grabbing berries and moving on.
Take this: Grandpa, the backpack android, isn’t just along for the ride. He’s a full-on sidekick with gadgets. He vacuums. He scans. He helps Vimita sling jelly to solve environmental puzzles.
Quick note: that jelly? It looks like it’s used to activate devices, reach tricky spots, or reveal fruit in hidden places. It’s almost like a mix between Luigi’s Mansion, Katamari Damacy, and a coloring book.
Kajune Land may look like a sugary escape, but PLANETA clearly wants players to think as much as they snack.
Previous Credits Say a Lot
PLANETA isn’t a front-facing studio like FromSoftware or Square Enix, but it plays a crucial role behind the scenes. Many of their devs are credited in supporting roles across major Japanese titles.
Here’s a quick glance at a few PLANETA-involved games:
Game Title | Genre | Role by PLANETA |
---|---|---|
Shiren the Wanderer: Serpentcoil Island | Roguelike RPG | Game design & co-development |
Pokémon Scarlet / Violet | RPG | Environmental design support |
Katamari Damacy REROLL (speculative credit) | Puzzle / Action | Physics & animation systems |
While Fruitimo! is clearly aimed at a younger (or young-at-heart) crowd, there’s no reason to doubt PLANETA’s chops. The polish on their past work suggests this isn’t just a throwaway project between bigger jobs.
Release Window Set, But No Word on Console Yet
Fruitimo! is currently confirmed for PC via Steam, with a release window set for September. That’s all we know. No pricing details. No specific day. And, perhaps surprisingly, no console versions announced.
It’s a bit odd, considering the game’s cartoony aesthetic and Nintendo-like vibe. You’d expect it to land on Switch, right?
Still, for now, it’s PC-only. That could change.
