As the holiday season kicks off, shoppers are not only bustling through stores but also facing an uptick in petty crimes. Cathy Reagan’s unsettling experience at Hobby Lobby in Cape Girardeau serves as a stark reminder to stay vigilant while enjoying the festive rush.

The Incident Unfolds

Cathy Reagan was engrossed in her Christmas shopping when things took a sudden turn. “I was in Hobby Lobby shopping and I turned around to look at something and my card was here with my purse. And just as I turned back around, there was a lady trying to get my purse,” Reagan recounted.

The entire ordeal happened in the blink of an eye. Reagan emphasizes how quickly things escalated, leaving her shaken but thankfully unharmed.

Police on the Rise of Holiday Theft

Officer Bobby Newton from the Cape Girardeau Police Department sheds light on the increasing trend of thefts during this busy season. “Yeah. You know, a lot of times we will see females especially will leave their purse in the shopping carts. They turn their back in their shopping, you know, especially this time of year, whenever people are out Christmas shopping, they get excited and they don’t think about what they’re doing by leaving their personal cart,” Newton explains.

These incidents aren’t isolated. The festive period, with its heightened foot traffic and shopping frenzy, creates opportunities for opportunistic thieves.

Quick Tips to Protect Your Belongings

Staying safe while shopping doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are some practical tips to keep your belongings secure:

  • Stay Aware: Keep your purse close and avoid placing it on the shopping cart.
  • Use Anti-Theft Bags: Consider bags with secure closures and hidden compartments.
  • Stay in Groups: Shopping with friends or family can deter potential thieves.
  • Be Cautious of Distractions: Thieves often use distractions to divert your attention.

Implementing these simple measures can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

What to Do If You’re Targeted

Officer Newton advises that personal safety should always come first. “It’s very quick that somebody can walk up, take the whole purse, or they can just simply take the wallet out. And you don’t even realize your wallet has gone until you get up there to pay for it,” he warns.

If you find yourself in such a situation, the best course of action is to comply with the thief’s demands. “You know, it’s a very dangerous situation that you put yourself into. If you tried to resist that individual, you try to fight them. You know, it’s almost instinct to do so. But take a second and think, is my life worth what’s in my purse?” Newton advises.

Local Community Responses

The rise in thefts has prompted local businesses and community groups to take action. Many stores are increasing their security measures, such as installing more surveillance cameras and hiring additional security personnel.

Community awareness programs are also being launched to educate shoppers about the importance of safeguarding their belongings. These initiatives aim to create a safer shopping environment for everyone during the holiday season.

Statistics Highlighting the Issue

A recent report by the Cape Girardeau Police Department indicates a 20% increase in reported purse thefts compared to last year. The data underscores the need for heightened awareness and proactive measures among shoppers.

Year Reported Purse Thefts
2022 150
2023 180
2024 (Q1) 200

These numbers highlight a worrying trend that requires immediate attention from both law enforcement and the community.
