GitHub Copilot CamoLeak Exposes New Secret Leak Risk

GitHub Copilot CamoLeak shows how a crafty prompt trick can turn a helpful coding assistant into a quiet data leak. How the CamoLeak attack worked on Copilot

Legit Security researcher Omer Mayraz built a proof of concept called CamoLeak that used remote prompt injection and GitHub image handling to siphon out small but valuable secrets from Copilot Chat. In plain terms, an attacker hides instructions inside comments or markdown so Copilot treats them as normal content. Then the attacker uses GitHub image links as a covert channel to carry the stolen text back to a server the attacker controls.

The key trick: map characters to tiny images so Copilot does not send text directly. Copilot would render a sequence of 1 by 1 pixel images, each representing one character. As GitHub fetched those images, the attacker could read the sequence and rebuild the secret. The method avoids sending readable data over normal network calls and instead turns routine image fetches into a data stream.

GitHub already uses a proxy known as Camo to prevent direct image links from exposing user requests. That proxy signs and rewrites image URLs so external hosts cannot see who requested what. That protection made a direct exfiltration attempt fail. Mayraz then registered many tiny images on an attacker server, got GitHub to sign each image separately, and used those signed Camo links as a dictionary for characters.

This two step work around allowed the attacker to:

  • Cause Copilot to substitute text with the corresponding signed image links

  • Force GitHub to fetch a specific ordered set of images

  • Reassemble the secret from the image request order

This attack does not move large files. It targets short sensitive items like API keys, tokens, and short code snippets. Legit Security and other researchers emphasized that even a few stolen characters can unlock far wider damage.

What GitHub changed and what that means for users

After the research was reported through proper disclosure channels, GitHub disabled image rendering inside Copilot Chat in August. That is a blunt but effective fix because it removes the channel CamoLeak relied on. GitHub’s action shows the platform treats prompt injection risks seriously and is willing to remove features to protect user data.

Disabling image rendering in Copilot Chat stopped this specific trick, but it did not end the broader class of prompt injection threats. Researchers warn that AI agents with access to developer workflows raise new attack surfaces. Legit Security CTO Liav Caspi said the team had to invent a creative sequence of steps to bypass protections, and that such creativity suggests defenders must stay vigilant.

Proven limits and real risks to developers

CamoLeak is a clever proof of concept, not a mass data heist tool. But it proves a real point: small channels can carry high value. The attack can leak:

  • API keys and tokens

  • Short config snippets

  • Passwords and credentials
    Those items can be used to escalate access, pivot into other systems, or trigger automated breach chains.

  • Scan repositories for hidden or unusual comments and untrusted markdown that could carry prompts.

  • Rotate high value keys and enforce short lifetimes for tokens where possible.

Treat AI assistants as an active part of your attack surface. That means applying code review, secrets scanning, and least privilege access to tokens that AI tools can reach.

Bigger picture for AI in developer tools

CamoLeak highlights a recurring pattern: as platforms race to add AI helpers, security lags behind. Companies often push features to improve productivity. Attackers then probe for small allowances that become channels for data leaks. GitHub’s quick fix shows one company learning from that pattern. The broader lesson is simple: every new AI feature must get threat modeling, not just usability testing.

Developers should expect more rapid changes to AI tools and tighter controls around what agents can read and render. Security teams must balance developer productivity and safe defaults that limit external content rendering or automatic actions when private data is in play.
